Devastating flash floods in eastern Spain have left 213 people dead, most in the Valencia region, and an unknown number is still missing. Thousands of volunteers are aiding authorities in clearing the thick mud and debris that still cover streets, homes, and cars, many of which contained victims who were trapped by the fast-rising waters. Flash floods swept through towns around Valencia, overwhelming the Magro, Turia, and Poyo rivers. In some areas, such as Chiva, rainfall in just eight hours exceeded the previous 20 months’ total.
This flooding, intensified by high Mediterranean sea temperatures and influenced by a stalling cut-off low pressure system, follows Spain’s recent cycles of severe drought. The national response includes 5,000 soldiers, additional police forces, and financial aid measures, with volunteers working alongside officials to support those affected. However, the Valencia regional government faced criticism for a delayed flood warning, as alerts only reached mobile phones after flooding had begun.
