Dublin: Transport groups have raised concerns that shortages in public transport services and taxis could create significant challenges for Christmas travel. They warn that delays, overcrowding, and reduced availability of services may disrupt plans for commuters and holiday travellers alike.
Public Transport Challenges
- Bus Services: The rollout of Phase 6A of the BusConnects service has been delayed, compounding existing issues in accommodating the seasonal surge in demand.
- Irish Rail Upgrades: Major track renovations will disrupt rail services, with no Irish Rail service running between Connolly Station and Grand Canal Dock from December 26 to January 5.
- Overcrowding: The Dublin Commuter Coalition has cautioned that overcrowding on key bus routes, such as the 46A and 145, will likely worsen during the festive period. Chairperson Jason Cullen warned that commuters may face extended wait times for regular buses, urging travellers to plan journeys well in advance to avoid being stranded.
Taxi Shortages
- High Demand: Taxis are already in short supply on weekends, a problem expected to worsen over Christmas as cities and town centres experience peak holiday activity.
- Industry Challenges: Pat Crotty, Chief Executive of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland, highlighted that the high cost of obtaining a taxi license discourages new entrants into the profession. He suggested employing part-time drivers as a potential solution to meet the seasonal demand.

Transport groups and industry representatives have emphasised the importance of planning journeys in advance, particularly during peak travel times. Without preparation, delays and disruptions could leave many travellers struggling to reach their destinations or return home.
The Dublin Commuter Coalition further urged the government to address the ongoing public transport and taxi shortages, calling for long-term solutions to ensure reliable and efficient services during high-demand periods.
“Commuters should expect delays and plan accordingly, as the current infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle the holiday rush,” Cullen stated, underscoring the pressing need for improvements in Ireland’s transport system.
