Washington – U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to countries that continue to reject American beef, following Australia’s recent move to ease long-standing biosecurity restrictions on U.S. beef imports.
Trump welcomed the Australian decision and used the opportunity to assert the quality of American beef. “It is undeniable that U.S. beef is the safest and best in the world. That is why Australia buys so much of it,” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. He added, “Other countries that reject America’s beautiful beef are taking notice.”
While Australia is now importing more beef from the U.S. than it exports, trade relations remain complex. U.S. exports to Australia still face a 10% across-the-board tariff, as well as duties on steel and aluminium. Trump has also reportedly threatened a 200% tariff on pharmaceutical imports, intensifying trade tensions.
Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell expressed uncertainty over whether the relaxation of beef import rules would lead to broader trade concessions or an improved bilateral trade agreement.
Easing Restrictions Amid Supply Pressures
Australia’s softened stance comes amid a domestic slowdown in beef production, prompting the country to increase imports. In 2024, Australia exported approximately 400,000 metric tonnes of beef to the U.S., valued at $2.9 billion.
Australian officials, however, emphasised that the decision to ease restrictions was not driven by trade negotiations but was the outcome of a long-standing biosecurity review conducted in line with scientific assessments.
Since 2003, both Australia and the U.S. had imposed strict beef import controls due to BSE concerns. The easing of these measures reflects updated evaluations of disease risk and marks a potential turning point in agricultural trade between the two nations.
