Dublin: Pope Francis, the global leader of the Catholic Church, is currently in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on February 14, 2025, after experiencing severe respiratory issues. His condition has been complicated by a complex lung infection and early signs of kidney failure. Despite these challenges, Pope Francis remains alert and has participated in Mass with his medical team.
In response to his health crisis, devout Catholics worldwide have gathered to offer prayers for his recovery. In Rome, groups of nuns and pilgrims have assembled outside the hospital, singing and praying for the Pope’s well-being.
In the event of the Pope’s passing, Dublin-born Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, the current Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, will oversee the interregnum period. Appointed by Pope Francis in 2019, Cardinal Farrell’s duties include officially confirming the Pope’s death, organising the conclave for electing a new pontiff, and managing the Church’s day-to-day affairs during the sede vacante.
Cardinal Farrell, born in Drimnagh, Dublin, in 1947, has had a distinguished career within the Church. He has served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life since 2016 and was appointed Camerlengo in 2019. His responsibilities expanded in 2020 when he was named President of the Commission for Confidential Matters and further in 2022 as Chair of the Pontifical Committee for Investments.
