Legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra died on Monday morning in Mumbai at the age of 89, police sources confirmed. The screen icon, who appeared in over 300 films across a remarkable career, had been unwell for the past month. His final rites were performed at Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle, where his family opted for a private ceremony attended only by close friends.
Dharmendra had been hospitalised in October after experiencing breathlessness and had undergone a corneal transplant earlier this year.
The actor’s death prompted tributes from across the film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Govinda and Sanjay Dutt.
A self-made star from rural Punjab, Dharmendra built a career that thrived alongside changing eras—from the Rajesh Khanna wave to the Amitabh Bachchan era—delivering classics such as Sholay, Satyakam, and Chupke Chupke. Though awards were few, his widespread popularity endured for decades.
Dharmendra also briefly served in politics, representing Bikaner in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.
