Dublin: Met Éireann has extended a nationwide yellow weather warning as Storm Dave approaches Ireland, with severe conditions expected over the weekend.
The storm is forecast to make landfall around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that are expected to persist until approximately 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. As a result, the warning period has been extended into Sunday morning.
A yellow wind alert is in place across the country during this period. However, it is understood that Dublin and eastern counties—previously impacted by Storm —are—are likely to avoid the worst of the conditions.
Coastal and Public Safety Concerns
The Irish Coast Guard has urged the public to avoid coastal areas, harbours, piers, and low-lying promenades during periods of high tide due to the increased risk of flooding and dangerous waves.
The National Severe Weather and Flooding Coordination Group met on Thursday to assess preparedness and monitor developments as the storm system moves in from the Atlantic.
Risk of Escalation and Localised Impacts
Forecasters have warned that conditions may deteriorate further, with the possibility of upgraded alerts, including orange-level warnings, particularly in western and northwestern counties. The Met Office has also issued yellow alerts covering much of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Weather expert Alan O’Reilly indicated that very strong winds are likely on Saturday afternoon, with the potential for more severe warnings in exposed regions.
The storm is expected to have its greatest impact in western and southern counties, including Cork and Kerry, where wind gusts have already reached Force 6 to 7 along coastal areas.
Authorities have warned of possible fallen trees, structural damage, and hazardous driving conditions.
Public Preparedness Advised
Residents are being advised to take precautionary measures, including charging mobile devices, securing outdoor items, and stocking essential supplies ahead of the storm’s arrival. Households in flood-prone areas are encouraged to prepare a flood response plan and assemble an emergency kit.
As part of the government’s preparedness guidance, the emergency kit should include items such as a torch, warm and waterproof clothing, a battery-powered or wind-up radio, a fully charged mobile phone, rubber gloves and boots, a first aid kit, and blankets. Additional essentials for children should also be considered where necessary.
Emergency contact numbers should be kept easily accessible.
Conditions are expected to improve on Sunday, with drier weather forecast. However, colder temperatures are likely, with a possibility of snow in higher elevations.
