Kilkenny: Global healthcare leader Abbott is set to create 1,000 new jobs in Ireland, with 800 positions in Kilkenny and 200 in Donegal, as part of a significant €440 million investment. This expansion underscores Ireland’s growing role as a global hub for diabetes care and medical innovation.
State-of-the-Art Facility in Kilkenny
Abbott’s new 30,000-square-meter facility in Kilkenny is poised to become the world’s largest manufacturing site for FreeStyle Libre sensors, advanced glucose-monitoring devices for people with diabetes.
At the facility’s inauguration, attended by Prime Minister Simon Harris, it was highlighted that the opening cements Ireland’s position as a global leader in diabetes care solutions.
Expansion in Donegal
In addition to the Kilkenny facility, Abbott is expanding its site near Donegal Town, creating 200 new roles. This development emphasises the company’s commitment to regional growth and the distribution of its operations across Ireland.
Commitment to the Community
Abbott is also investing in local education initiatives, awarding a €100,000 grant to The Ireland Funds. This funding will support educational opportunities for students from three DEIS schools in Kilkenny, helping to nurture the next generation of Irish talent.
Ireland: A Strategic Hub for Abbott
Abbott, which has been operating in Ireland since 1946, now employs over 6,000 people across its ten sites on the island. These facilities, located in Dublin, Sligo, Donegal, Clonmel, Cavan, Galway, Kilkenny, and Longford, manufacture a wide range of medical devices and healthcare products.
Robert Ford, Abbott’s Chairman and CEO, praised Ireland as a strategic base for the company, citing its skilled workforce and supportive business environment. IDA Ireland Chief Executive Michael Lohan also commended Abbott’s long-standing contribution to the Irish economy, describing the company’s 78-year presence as a testament to its partnership with Ireland.
Investment Beyond Ireland
In addition to the €440 million investment in Ireland, Abbott has announced an £85 million expansion of its facility in Witney, Oxfordshire, in the United Kingdom, further bolstering its European operations.
