Washington: Apple and Google have signed a landmark multi-year agreement that will see Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models power Apple’s revamped Siri, significantly strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two tech giants and bolstering Alphabet’s position in the AI race.
The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Under the agreement, Google’s Gemini models will support Apple’s updated Siri, due to launch later this year, alongside future Apple Intelligence features. The move builds on Google’s existing status as the default search engine on Apple devices — a lucrative arrangement estimated to generate billions in annual revenue for both companies.
With access to Apple’s installed base of more than two billion active devices, the partnership is expected to deliver a major boost to Google’s AI ecosystem. Google noted that its technology will be integrated into Apple’s foundation models while continuing to run on-device and via private cloud systems to maintain the company’s strict privacy standards.
The Gemini integration follows Apple’s adoption of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2024, which is now used to support Siri in responding to complex queries. Apple’s continued collaboration with OpenAI is expected to remain in place, though analysts say the Gemini deal could reshape competitive dynamics across the sector.
The agreement comes as OpenAI and Google intensify their rivalry in generative AI development. Reports suggest OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rallied teams in response to the launch of Gemini 3, while Google has invested heavily in advanced large-language models and image-generation tools.
Apple’s progress in AI has been slower, with delays to Siri upgrades and key leadership departures. The rollout of new generative AI products has so far received mixed reactions from users.
News of the deal sent Alphabet’s valuation soaring above $4 trillion, capping a 65% share price increase over the past year amid rising investor confidence in Google’s AI strategy.
