DUBLIN: A new ferry service has been launched from Ireland to France in the wake of Brexit. DFDS, a Danish company, has started a direct ferry service from Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford to Dunkirk in northern France.
A total of 65 lorries carrying Irish, French and European Union flags traveled on the first day. The service began shortly after Brexit came into effect. Each crossing takes about 24 hours. The service runs six times a week.
Although the hauliers have a longer journey, they have the advantage of not having to face customs declarations or face additional checks and inspections from Britain to the UK. Truckers also see this as a way to avoid ‘red tape’ issues on the UK landbridge. Drivers are reacting positively to the new journey.
“It may have taken a bit longer, but I’ll be at my delivery point in Germany by 9pm tonight…We’re feeling well-rested and ready for the drive ahead,” said Carroll, who works for DG McArdle International.
