Dublin: Tánaiste Simon Harris has rejected calls for additional cost-of-living measures and the recall of the Dáil Éireann, describing such demands as premature and unhelpful.
“I’m not interested in show politics,” Harris said, responding to suggestions that the Dáil should be reconvened to introduce further interventions on fuel prices. He emphasised that the government remains focused on addressing the current economic challenges through ongoing work rather than symbolic gestures.
Harris warned that the global economic situation is severe, describing the current energy crisis as unprecedented in scale. He said the government is working closely with state agencies and international partners to manage the impact and will hold further discussions at a coalition meeting scheduled for next week.
While noting that there are currently no immediate concerns about fuel supply, Harris cautioned that the situation remains fluid, particularly due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on global energy infrastructure.
He also stressed that guidance issued to households and businesses on energy conservation is practical and necessary under current conditions. Looking ahead, Harris warned that the situation could become significantly more challenging if the conflict continues into the winter months.
“The winter will present a very different set of challenges compared to summer,” he said. “If the war persists, the economic impact is likely to intensify further.”
