India’s journey to independence began in 1757, when the British East India Company took control after the Battle of Plassey. Over time, British rule tightened its grip, but the spirit of freedom grew stronger. In the early 1900s, Mahatma Gandhi inspired the nation with his powerful idea of nonviolent protest, uniting millions in the struggle for self-rule.
After World War II, a weakened Britain agreed to leave, but communal tensions led to the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. The moment finally came on August 15, when Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, raised the tricolour at the Red Fort and delivered his “Tryst with Destiny” speech.
Today, Independence Day is filled with flag hoisting, parades, and cultural programmes—reminding us of the courage, unity, and sacrifice that won India its freedom.
