New Delhi: The Government of India has launched the electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card, a major digital initiative designed to simplify OCI services for the Indian diaspora worldwide. The new system enables existing OCI cardholders to access their cards digitally without submitting a fresh application or undergoing physical verification.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah officially launched the e-OCI card in New Delhi, describing it as a citizen-centric reform that will modernise OCI services and make them fully digital.
The initiative is expected to benefit more than five million OCI cardholders across the world.
Fully Digital OCI Services
Under the new system, applicants can complete the entire OCI process online, including:

Submitting applications

Uploading supporting documents
-
Tracking application status
-
Downloading the digitally issued e-OCI card after approval
Existing OCI cardholders will automatically receive their digital e-OCI card without the need to submit a new application or undergo additional verification.
The government has also introduced a unique registration number for every OCI cardholder to improve identification and record management.
No More Reissuing OCI Booklets
One of the key changes under the new system is the removal of the requirement to reissue the OCI booklet when a cardholder obtains a new passport after the age of 20.
However, OCI holders will still be required to update their passport details online whenever a new passport is issued, ensuring their records remain current.

Benefits for the Government
The new platform will also streamline government administration by enabling completely digital processing of OCI services, reducing paperwork and administrative costs while strengthening centralised data management.
The government said the system will integrate with digital immigration infrastructure, allowing real-time identity verification at airports, enhanced security screening and reduced risk of fraud.
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) scheme allows eligible Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to register as OCI cardholders if they were Indian citizens on or after 26 January 1950, or were eligible to become Indian citizens on that date.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated that OCI status is not dual citizenship and does not confer political rights. OCI cardholders are not entitled to the constitutional rights reserved exclusively for Indian citizens, including those relating to public employment under Article 16 of the Constitution.
The launch of the e-OCI card builds on earlier digital initiatives such as the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), further modernising immigration and consular services for India’s global diaspora.
