Copenhagen: A change by the Danish health department to require nurses and doctors to know Danish while applying for health sector jobs in Denmark will benefit thousands of Indian healthcare workers.

Foreign medical professionals awaiting approval to work in Denmark do not have to pass the evaluation test before starting work but must demonstrate knowledge of the Danish language within a certain period of time after starting work. The government hopes that those who enter on a full-time basis can do so within the first six months. The ministry hopes that enough time will be allotted to assess hospital staff’s skills and Danish language communication skills. “It will be ensured that healthcare workers have the necessary level of Danish language skills for patient safety,” the ministry stated in the agreement’s outline.
The government has also formed a task force to increase health worker recruitment. This includes representatives from the local health department and the municipality. 5 million kroner have been earmarked for special recruitment for the next year, said Health Minister Sophie Lohde. Thousands of patients are on waiting lists in Denmark’s hospitals. By speeding up new recruitments, the Danish government hopes to reduce the number of waiting lists as much as possible.
