New Delhi: Ireland is set to broaden its educational collaboration with India, with plans to establish Irish university campuses in the country and introduce dual degree and student exchange programmes in partnership with Indian higher education institutions.
Ireland’s Higher Education Minister, James Lawless, revealed these developments during his recent visit to India, emphasising the country’s commitment to strengthening academic and research ties with India.
Irish Universities to Reach Indian Campuses
Ireland aims to provide Indian students with a seamless transition to its universities by allowing them to complete their first year of study in India before moving to Irish campuses for the remainder of their degree programmes.
This model, which has already been successfully implemented in Malaysia and China, is expected to significantly reduce costs compared to the current fees for studying in Ireland. The initiative will also enhance academic mobility and foster greater cultural exchange between the two nations.
Growing Indian Student Presence in Ireland
With over 9,000 Indian students currently enrolled in Irish universities, India represents the third-largest international student population in Ireland, following the United States and China.
Popular courses among Indian students include:
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
- Business & Management
- IT & Data Science
- Analytics & Artificial Intelligence
The comparatively lower tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and strong post-graduation job prospects make Ireland an attractive destination for Indian students.
Ireland: A Strategic Hub for Indian Businesses
Beyond education, Minister Lawless highlighted Ireland’s appeal as a stable, secure, and business-friendly destination for Indian companies looking to expand into European markets.
As part of this effort, IDA Ireland, the country’s foreign investment agency, will engage with Indian businesses already operating in Ireland to strengthen economic ties and promote investment opportunities.
