Dublin: In alignment with European Union environmental legislation, Ireland will implement a ban on a wide range of single-use plastic packaging, including plastic nets used for fruits and vegetables, condiment sachets, and other disposable containers. The legislation, aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability, is set to be fully enforced by January 1, 2030.
Repak, the government-backed organisation responsible for managing packaging waste, has issued detailed guidance to supermarkets, hospitality providers, and manufacturers outlining the upcoming changes. According to Repak, the new rules will prohibit plastic wraps for products such as cucumbers, as well as plastic trays and pans commonly used for food packaging.
Under the legislation, plastic nets used for packaging fruits and vegetables weighing less than 1.5 kilograms will be banned. However, certain exemptions may apply to delicate items such as raspberries and other soft fruits, where alternative packaging solutions are not yet viable.
The ban will also apply to single-use plastic sachets for sauces, condiments, spices, and preserves, as well as miniature shampoo bottles in hotels. In addition, the sale of food and beverages in single-use plastic trays and cups will be phased out.
To support the transition, Repak has proposed a range of sustainable alternatives. These include refillable and washable condiment containers for use at refill stations, as well as compostable sachets for take-away services. Businesses are being urged to begin adopting these alternatives ahead of the 2030 deadline.
A survey conducted last year revealed that three out of four Irish citizens view plastic waste as the country’s most pressing waste problem. Despite growing awareness, Ireland continues to generate more waste than it did a decade ago and is currently falling short of the EU’s 2025 recycling targets.
Repak emphasized that while progress is being made, comprehensive policy enforcement and industry cooperation will be critical in ensuring Ireland meets its environmental commitments and reduces its plastic footprint.
