Dublin: Ireland’s whiskey industry has achieved a new global sales milestone, with 2024 marking the highest volume ever recorded for Irish whiskey worldwide. According to the Irish Whiskey Global Trade Report, sales reached 16.15 million cases, underscoring the sector’s sustained international momentum.
The United States remains the industry’s largest and most valuable market, with American consumers purchasing more than 5.47 million cases—equivalent to one in every three bottles of Irish whiskey sold globally. Despite the U.S. being the world’s highest-value spirits market, exports face a 15% EU tariff, prompting the Irish Whiskey Association to renew calls for a return to a “zero-zero” trade agreement to support competitiveness.
Global Growth and Expanding Markets
Beyond the U.S., the report identifies Poland, Germany, India, and the United Kingdom as the strongest international markets for Irish whiskey.
Domestic consumption remains robust as well, with 707,000 cases sold in Ireland last year. This places Ireland as the fourth-largest market for premium Irish spirits. A standard case consists of 9 litres, typically packaged as 12 bottles of 75cl.
The report also highlights remarkable growth in emerging markets:
- India: +120% growth over three years
- Japan: +124% over the same period
- European Union: Rising sales across multiple member states, including 10 of the top 20 markets
Future Opportunities and Trade Priorities
Irish whiskey currently represents just 12% of the global whiskey market, signalling significant potential for expansion. The Irish Whiskey Association says its top priorities include:
- Eliminating U.S. tariffs to strengthen access to the world’s most valuable spirits market
- Securing an EU–India Free Trade Agreement, which it views as a transformative opportunity given that India is the largest whiskey market on the planet.
