Dublin: Education Minister Helen McEntee has announced revised grade bands for the upcoming Junior Cycle exams, expected to benefit the 73,000 students sitting the exams this year. Under the changes, a Distinction will now be awarded for scores of 85% and above, down from 90%, while a Higher Merit will apply to marks between 70–84%, previously 75–90%.
The adjustments aim to better reflect students’ efforts and classroom learning, with McEntee stating the changes will lead to more students receiving higher grades. She emphasised the importance of balanced assessment, encouraging students to focus on learning and personal development rather than solely on exams.
The revised grading bands will take effect from 2025 onwards. A final report on the Junior Cycle Framework from the University of Limerick is currently under review by the NCCA, with further reforms anticipated.
