Dublin: HSE data shows patients are waiting between one and 26 weeks for an initial assessment for eating disorder services. As of March 13, 92 people were on waiting lists across 11 specialist teams.
Following Budget 2025, new adult and CAMHS eating disorder teams will be established in Dublin South Kildare/West Wicklow, the Mid-West, and the Midlands, expanding coverage to wider catchment areas.
Children requiring inpatient care are referred to one of four CAMHS acute units in Dublin, Cork, and Galway. Adults can access HSE-approved mental health units or private hospital programmes where recommended. St Vincent’s University Hospital provides three dedicated beds for specialist adult care.
The Department of Health reported 562 assessments in 2024, a 25% increase from 2023. While some benefit from inpatient care, research indicates community-based treatment is most effective. By year-end, 14 of the 16 planned community teams under the National Clinical Programme for Eating Disorders will be in place.
