Dublin: Thousands of rail passengers faced significant disruption after damage to overhead power lines in the Raheny area caused widespread cancellations on DART and commuter train services serving North Dublin.
Irish Rail confirmed that DART services operating between Malahide and Clontarf Road, as well as between Howth and Clontarf Road, were suspended following the incident. Commuter rail services running from Howth Junction to Connolly Station were also cancelled.
According to the rail operator, the disruption was caused by damage to overhead electrical lines in Raheny at approximately 8:30pm on the previous evening.
To minimise inconvenience for passengers, special bus services have been arranged between Drogheda and Connolly Station for customers travelling on cross-border rail services to and from Belfast.
Rail officials said that although one of the affected lines was unavailable, the remaining operational track was used overnight to transport concertgoers attending a music event at Malahide Castle back into the city.
Repair work could not begin immediately and only commenced after 1:30am, resulting in ongoing service interruptions into the following day.
Irish Rail stated that engineers continue to work on restoring the damaged infrastructure, but the exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined. The company added that it is currently unable to provide a definitive timeline for the full restoration of normal services.
