Red Fort Blast Confirmed as Suicide Attack; Mastermind Identified as Dr. Umar Mohammed

New Delhi: Police have confirmed that the explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort was a suicide attack, with investigators identifying Dr. Umar Mohammed as the suspected mastermind behind the blast. Authorities have released his photograph and confirmed that he was driving the car that exploded, reportedly killing him on the spot.

According to investigators, the blast is believed to have been carried out by an associate of the doctors recently arrested with explosives by the Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana police. National media, citing officials involved in the probe, report that Dr. Umar Mohammed—suspected to be part of a wider terror network—was the key planner.

The explosion occurred at 6:52 p.m. on Monday near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in Old Delhi, killing nine people and injuring twenty others. CCTV footage shows the Hyundai i20 car parked in the area for nearly three hours before the detonation.

Earlier this week, police arrested eight people linked to a terror network spanning Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Among them were three doctors, from whom investigators seized 360 kg of ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and 2,900 kg of IED-making materials. Authorities suspect that Dr. Umar Mohammed was an associate of the arrested men, identified as Dr. Muzammil Ahmed Khanne and Dr. Adeel Ahmed Rather.

Prime Minister Condemns Attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Bhutan, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.

The Prime Minister added that he had been in close contact with all investigating agencies through the night and reiterated that the government would ensure swift and decisive action against those behind the attack.
