Dublin – Ireland’s Bank Holiday weekend has been marred by heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and widespread disruption due to Storm Floris. Though the storm has slightly deviated from its originally forecasted path—reducing the overall threat level—it continues to bring wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h across much of the country.
Storm Shifts Path, But Threat Persists
Met Éireann confirmed that while Storm Floris is now tracking closer to Ireland’s borders rather than directly across the country, wind speeds remain hazardous, particularly in northwestern counties.
In neighbouring Scotland, the UK Met Office has warned of potential wind speeds reaching up to 160 km/h, with disruptions expected to ferries, flights, and public transport over the next 24 hours.
Status Yellow Warnings in Effect
Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow wind warnings for the counties of Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim, and Monaghan. These warnings will remain in effect until 4:00 PM today, subject to further updates based on the storm’s movement.
In addition, Status Yellow rainfall warnings have been issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, as persistent downpours may lead to localised flooding and hazardous road conditions.
The warnings highlight the potential for:
- Dangerous driving conditions
- Tree falls and structural damage
- Coastal flooding and large waves
- Power outages and disruptions to outdoor events
Emergency Services and ESB on Alert
ESB Networks maintenance crews have been placed on standby to respond to any outages caused by the storm. Local authorities and emergency services remain on high alert across affected counties.
Three separate yellow alerts were issued yesterday by the UK Met Office in anticipation of the storm’s impact, with a focus on the north and northwest regions of Ireland.
Current Conditions and Outlook
As of this morning, cloud cover, heavy rain, and gusty winds are widespread, with thunderstorms possible in some regions. Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 16°C to 22°C.
Tonight will remain wet and windy, particularly in western and northern areas, as Storm Floris continues to push in from the north. However, Met Éireann forecasts a clearer and calmer day on Tuesday, with improving weather conditions expected nationwide.
