Washington – The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi has issued a strong advisory to Indian students studying in the United States, warning them against violating the terms of their student visas. The embassy emphasised that failure to adhere to visa regulations—such as skipping classes, withdrawing from academic programmes without authorisation, or abandoning university enrolment—may lead to visa revocation and potential ineligibility for future U.S. visas.
In a statement posted on its official website, the embassy reminded students of the importance of maintaining their “student status” under the conditions of their F-1 visa. “Dropping out, unauthorised absences, or failing to report academic changes may result in the immediate termination of visa status,” the message reads. “Such violations not only compromise legal stay in the U.S., but may also negatively impact future academic and immigration opportunities.”
Record Number of Indian Students
According to the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange, the number of international students in the U.S. reached a historic high in the 2023–2024 academic year, with 1,126,690 foreign students enrolled—an increase of 7% over the previous year. Of this total, 331,602 students were from India, marking a significant 23% increase from the previous year and reaffirming India’s status as the largest source of international students in the United States.
Enforcement and Visa Risks
The U.S. government, under both past and current administrations, continues to enforce immigration rules strictly. The embassy’s warning comes amid rising concerns about student visa misuse, particularly among international students failing to comply with enrolment and academic performance standards.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency also reminded students earlier this month of the requirement to report employment within 10 days of starting Optional Practical Training (OPT). Failure to comply may lead to automatic termination of a student’s SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record.
Violations such as poor academic performance, unauthorised off-campus employment, and extended absences are taken seriously and may result in deportation or revocation of work authorisation.
