Justice Donal O’Donnell nominated as Supreme Court Chief Justice

DUBLIN: Justice Donal O’Donnell will be the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. O’Donnell has been nominated by President Michael D. Higgins. The post will be vacant from October 10, after the retirement of current Chief Justice Frank Clarke.

O’Donnell, a member of the Bar of Ireland in 1982, was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in 2020. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Laws from University College Dublin, a degree of Barrister-at-Law from King’s Inn and a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia. O’Donnell is the chairman of the Judges’ Library Committee. He was also a director of Our Lady’s Hospice from 2009 to 2014 and a member of the Law Reform Commission from 2005 to 2012.

Justice Anthony Collins EU. The court may be the Advocate General

The government has also decided to appoint Judge Anthony Collins as Advocate General to the Court of Justice of the European Union. A panel set up under Article 255 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the EU will evaluate Collins and consider his suitability for the post.

Collins would replace current Advocate General Gerard Hogan and serve for the remainder of his term. Hogan’s tenure will end on October 8, 2024.

Collins has been a Judge in the European Union’s General Court since September 2013. He previously served as Senior Counsel at the Bar of Ireland from 2003 to 2013.

From 1986 to 1990, and again from 1997 to 2003, he was the Director of the Irish Centre for European Law at Trinity. Collins holds a Barrister-at-Law from King’s Inn and a B.A. (Mod.) in Legal Science from Trinity.
