Boston Scientific Announces Planned Job Cuts at Irish Operations

Dublin: Medical technology giant Boston Scientific has notified the Irish Government of planned job losses at its facilities in Galway, Cork, and Clonmel as part of a global restructuring programme. While the company has not disclosed the exact number of positions affected, the move could impact employees across its Irish operations, which currently employ more than 7,000 people.

The restructuring plan was approved by the company’s board last week as part of a global cost-cutting strategy. The Department of Enterprise confirmed that it received a collective redundancy notification from Boston Scientific on July 22.

Under Irish employment law, a collective redundancy notice is typically required when an employer proposes to make 30 or more employees redundant within a specified period.

Boston Scientific has maintained a significant presence in Ireland for more than 30 years, with major manufacturing and operational sites in Galway, Cork, and Clonmel.

In a statement, the company said the restructuring programme is intended to strengthen operational capabilities while optimising its global supply chain network. It also emphasised that Ireland remains a key part of its worldwide operations and acknowledged the important contribution made by its Irish workforce.

Labour Party employment spokesperson George Lawlor described Boston Scientific as a major employer and urged the company to protect as many jobs as possible.

He also linked the planned restructuring to growing international economic uncertainty, including the impact of tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump. Lawlor called on the government to introduce a comprehensive action plan to safeguard employment and support workers who may be affected by the proposed redundancies.
