Brazil opens Copa America with a 3-0 victory over Venezuela
The reigning champions and hosts Brazil kicked off the Copa America 2021 with a convincing victory. The yellow army thrashed Venezuela 3-0 in the inaugural match.
Neymar, who scored one goal and assisted on another, was the evening’s standout performer. Brazil won comfortably thanks to goals from Marquinhos (23rd minute), Neymar (64), and Gabriel Barbosa (89).
Brazil came close to scoring several times in the first half, but were blocked by Venezuela’s strong defense. Brazil had three chances to take the lead in the first 15 minutes, while another Brazil attempt missed in front of Venezuelan goalkeeper Joel Graterol in the 20th minute.
Venezuela fought without their full strength as 12 people, including players and staff, were confirmed to have infected with COVID-19 before the match.
