Irish Olympian attacked on Dublin street and requires surgery
DUBLIN: Even an Olympian is not safe from thugs in Ireland. An unprovoked attack in Dublin left Ireland’s first-ever taekwondo representative drenched in blood and in need of surgery.
The horrific incident happened on Friday night, August 13, in Dublin City Centre, as taekwondo star Jack Woolley was out for a dinner with a friend.
Woolley, who was eliminated in the first round of the 58kg category in the Tokyo Olympics, was hospitalised following the random attack.
The Olympian wrote on his Instagram page that he was on his way to a bar after the meals when “a gang of roughy 8-12 men and women in their 20s began violently attacking people along the boardwalk”.
Unfortunately, the 22-year-old was a victim of one of these random attacks, as he was just walking bye when he was punched in the face by one of these group members. “Only one punch and followed by ‘my mistake wrong person’ then they continued to run off down the road attacking more civilians minding their own business,” he wrote.
Woolley added: “Luckily I was able to phone an ambulance and stay conscious. My friends helped me throughout all over this and I’m glad to say they both are well and safe.
‘I am lucky this is all that happened as there were a handful of us hospitalised… I’m currently waiting in James’s hospital for mouth surgery.
“Thank you all again for the support and kind messages. I hope for a speedy recovery. It’s been a tough couple of months. WHAT A DAY.”
A garda spokesperson confirmed that no arrests have yet been made, but that the matter is being investigated.
