California has accused the man involved in the kidnapping and murder of an Indian-origin Sikh family

Authorities in California have accused the man involved in the kidnapping and murder of an Indian-origin Sikh family, including an eight-month-old infant, of four charges of first-degree murder, one for each life lost. Last week, a former unhappy employee of their trucking firm abducted and killed Aroohi Dheri (8 months old), her 27-year-old mother Jasleen Kaur, her 36-year-old father Jasdeep Singh, and her 39-year-old uncle Amandeep Singh.

On October 6, the man responsible for the kidnapping and death, Jesus Salgado, was apprehended. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was charged on Monday with four counts of first-degree murder, one for each life lost.

The Merced County district attorney’s office announced in a press release that it will not decide whether to seek the death sentence in the case of Salgado, 48, this year. Beyond the accusations, District Attorney Kimberly Lewis declined to comment on the case. Salgado is scheduled to appear in court later today.

According to the article, Salgado was accused of the killings of Jasdeep, his wife, Jasleen, their daughter, and Singh’s brother Amandeep. The inquiry into the family’s disappearance began on October 3rd, when authorities discovered Amandeep’s truck on fire in the town of Winton. When Amandeep, his brother and sister-in-law, or the couple’s infant could not be found, the family was reported missing.

The investigation led Merced County Sheriff’s Office officers to the family company, Unison Trucking, where video surveillance revealed a man kidnapping the family at gunpoint and driving them away in the truck.

Meanwhile, the families of the four Indian-origin Sikhs slain in the United States have gathered more than $300,000 to assist not just their families in California, but also their elderly parents in India.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, Salgado reportedly attempted suicide last Tuesday as detectives focused on him as a suspect in the case. He was hospitalised for two days before being placed into prison. Salgado is also charged with illegal possession of a handgun and arson for allegedly torching the truck. Alberto Salgado, his brother, was also detained in the case on charges of criminal conspiracy, accessory, and destroying evidence.  Salgado was imprisoned for nearly a decade after holding another family at gunpoint and robbing them in their driveway in 2005.
