The world’s biggest football festival in Qatar kicks off in few hours time
The Qatar 2022 World Cup begins on Sunday, November 20 at the Al Bayt Stadium, when the hosts face Ecuador in Group A.
The tournament was supposed to start the next day with Senegal’s game against the Netherlands at Al Thumama Stadium, but Qatar’s game was moved up to allow them to open their home tournament.
England will now play on the second day, with their Group B match against Iran slated for Monday, November 21, at 1 p.m. UK time. The match comes just eight days after the Premier League closes.
Wales’ first game after qualifying through the play-offs will likewise be on Monday, November 21.
Wales will subsequently face England in Group B on Tuesday, November 29.
The final will take place a week before Christmas, on Sunday, December 18, at Doha’s Lusail Stadium.
The World Cup 2022 will begin with 32 teams divided into eight groups of four:
- Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
- Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
- Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
- Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
- Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan
- Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
- Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
- Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, Education City Stadium, and Al Janoub Stadium will host the group games.
FIFA has not yet revealed the whole roster of artists for the opening ceremony. According to BTS, one of the seven members of the South Korean boy band, Jungkook, will sing a song named “Dreamers” during the event. According to The Telegraph, The Black Eyed Peas, Robbie Williams, and Nora Fatehi have all been mentioned as prospective performers for the opening ceremony.
