DUBLIN: Children’s hospitals in Dublin are under the most pressure in history as patients surge. The number of children in emergency departments is increasing dramatically. Children seeking treatment for other illnesses have also increased. Staff at Temple Street, Crumlin, Tallaght, and Connolly hospitals are under severe pressure.
In the winter, an increase in cases of influenza, group A streptococcus, and respiratory syncytial virus creates a problem for the health care system.
Management and clinical teams are working hard to ensure adequate staffing in emergency departments, critical care units, and wards. Adequate staff has been appointed.
However, they are under a lot of pressure. They have a burden beyond normal duty. The number of babies in need of immediate care is extremely high. All hospital resources should be concentrated on these sick children.
As a result, Children’s Health Ireland is urging families to take care to bring their children with minor illnesses to local hospitals and care centres. CHI’s clinical director, Dr. Ike Okafor, said it was a stormy environment in children’s hospitals.
He advised parents to exercise caution when administering the influenza vaccine to their children. Kids and teens aged 2 to 17 can get the vaccine for free from a local GP or pharmacy.
