Limerick: Unmanageable overcrowding in the hospital’s emergency department has caused a crisis at University Hospital Limerick. The O.P. section has been completely cancelled today as the crowd could not bear it.
The hospital’s emergency department is in crisis due to an increase in patients suffering from COVID, flu, and RSV. The hospital has confirmed this information. Extra staff members have been assigned to the job, and other categories of staff have been redeployed to the emergency department.
To alleviate overcrowding, additional surgical beds were made available at Ennis, Nenagh, and St. John’s hospitals. The “day beds” at the hospital have been converted into inpatient beds. The crisis, however, has not been resolved.
Only emergency surgeries will be performed in the coming days, according to officials. The National Ambulance Service transports critically ill patients from one hospital to another. Only the most critical patients, such as those suffering from heart attacks or strokes, are treated at UHL.
Hospital visits are also prohibited. Only parents of hospitalised children, dementia carers, and those visiting critically ill patients are exempt. These exemptions are only available for one person per patient.
Officials also stated that patients in the emergency department will have to wait a long time for treatment. The hospital administration apologised to the patients for the inconvenience and wait.
