Rare Snail Threatens Donald Trump’s Planned Ballroom at Doonbeg Resort in Clare
Clare: A rare species of protected snail has emerged as a major environmental issue surrounding US President Donald Trump’s proposed ballroom project at his Doonbeg resort in County Clare.
The approximately 2mm-long Vertigo angustior, a protected species found in ecologically sensitive areas, has prompted Ireland’s planning authorities to seek further environmental information before deciding on an appeal against the project.
Planning authorities seek further environmental studies
An Coimisiún Pleanála has written to TIGL Ireland Enterprises Limited, the company behind the Doonbeg development, requesting additional studies on the potential impact of the proposed ballroom on the area’s environment and biodiversity.
The commission has asked the company to resubmit a Natura Impact Statement, including an updated assessment of the condition and distribution of Vertigo angustior within the relevant Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
It has also requested a hydrological assessment examining how excavation, earthworks and the construction of the ballroom foundations could affect groundwater conditions and the surrounding habitat.
The company has been given until October 29 to provide the requested information, while the decision on the planning appeal has been deferred until November 25.
Appeal against ballroom development
Clare County Council granted planning permission for the Doonbeg ballroom project in February. The proposed facility is designed to accommodate approximately 320 people.
The planning permission has since been challenged by Liam Madden, a 76-year-old man from Longford, who has appealed the decision to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Madden has argued that the planning application did not comply with the requirements of planning legislation and has raised a number of concerns about the proposed development, including its potential environmental impact.
The latest request for additional environmental assessments means the project will face further scrutiny before a final decision is reached.
Irish objector gains attention in the US
The dispute has also attracted international attention. The Washington Post recently profiled Madden in an article highlighting his opposition to Trump’s proposed ballroom.
Madden has become an unlikely figure in the controversy, portraying his objection as a fight to protect the local environment and prevent what he considers an inappropriate development.
