Irish Water Urges Public to Conserve Water as Drought Restrictions Increase

Dublin: Irish Water has urged households across the country to conserve water as dry weather continues to put pressure on supplies and a growing number of water treatment plants face drought-related challenges.

Irish Water operates around 750 water treatment plants, many of which are responsible for supplying drinking water to communities nationwide. The utility said 37 water supplies currently have restrictions in place as it works to protect supplies and minimise the impact on customers.

Minor supply pressures have been reported in parts of West Cork, Kerry and Galway, while measures are also being taken across more than 60 other water supplies to maintain adequate reserves through the late summer.

Public urged to reduce water use

Tom Cuddy, Irish Water’s Head of Asset Operations, thanked the public for continuing to conserve water but urged households to take further steps to reduce consumption.

He particularly advised people to check outdoor taps, tanks and other fittings for leaks, which can result in significant water wastage.

Residents are also being encouraged to avoid using garden hoses and to limit power washing wherever possible.

Reducing unnecessary outdoor water use, Irish Water said, can help prevent additional restrictions and ensure that sufficient supplies remain available during the summer months.

Check water availability

Irish Water has also developed a Water Conservation Calculator, which allows people to estimate water availability and understand the current pressure on supplies.

The utility is encouraging households to use the calculator and take practical measures to reduce their daily water consumption.
