Hundreds of traffic violators have been charged in Ireland over the past month

Dublin: Hundreds of traffic violators have been charged in Ireland over the past month, including during the Christmas and New Year periods. Gardai have opened 7,405 checkpoints across the country and conducted extensive checks. There were still numerous car accidents. Within a month, approximately 20 people were killed in traffic accidents. 14,704 people were arrested for speeding alone.

There were 4,829 traffic accidents reported during this time period. 745 people were arrested only for driving under the influence of alcohol. 136 people were arrested for driving while high on drugs. Without wearing seat belts, 256 people broke the law. 932 people were caught using mobile phones while driving.

The Garda organised a month-long Christmas and New Year road safety campaign. The four life-saving offences of drink-driving, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, and not wearing a seat belt were the focus of Garda awareness. This is based on the findings that these are significant contributors to road traffic accidents.

People should be more cautious when hitting vehicles, according to Assistant Commissioner Paula Hillman. Everyone should behave well on the road. The road is a public place. There is a collective responsibility to make it safe.
