The EU passport scan system may come into effect soon…

Brussels: The EES (Entry/Exit System), an automated system for registering citizens of non-EU countries arriving in the Schengen area, is expected to come into effect soon.

Previously, these non-EU nationals used to be recorded in their passports when entering and exiting European territory. However, the EU Commission pointed out that the EES implementation has several flaws, including the fact that manual passport stamping does not provide clear data on border crossings.

What is the EES (Entry/Exit System)..?

The EES (Entry/Exit System) is an automated IT system that registers visitors from these non-EU countries each time they enter the EU. EES will store information such as name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints, photos), entry, exit dates, and location.

The objective of implementing the new change.

The EES system will aid in the prevention of irregular migration and the security of European citizens. The new EES system will aid in the detection of document and identity fraud as well as make travel more convenient.

Some nationals, such as the British, Americans, Canadians, and Australians, can visit these EU countries without a visa, but they can only stay for 90 days. Illegal immigrants can also be tracked down by looking at their entry and exit dates.

This does not affect non-EU citizens, including Indians, residing in an EU country with a residency permit or visa.

With the entry/exit system fully operational, travellers who do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area can do so online via the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). It is necessary to obtain travel authorization.

ETIAS system..?

All non-EU visitors to an EU country, including tourists, second-home owners, family visitors, and short-term workers, are subject to the ETIAS system.

Visitors must apply for a visa in advance and pay a €7 fee. The visa is valid for three years and can be used on multiple occasions. It is not required for residents of an EU country who have a residency card or visa.
