Sergio Ramos, Spain defender, retires from international football

Sergio Ramos of Spain announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, confirming that he is not in head coach Luis de la Fuente’s plans.

Ramos called his quits after 180 appearances in a career that lasted nearly 18 years. Ramos was also a member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team.

Ramos, who will turn 37 in March, sent an open letter on social media in which he stated the new coach forced his hand. “The time has come—the time to say goodbye to the national team, our beloved and exciting Roja,” wrote Ramos.

Ramos has appeared 180 times for Spain, more than any other player in the country’s history.

Despite his injury recovery and progress with PSG, Luis Enrique did not choose him for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

De la Fuente took over for Luis Enrique in December, after Spain was knocked out of the World Cup in the last 16 by Morocco.

Spain’s next matches are Euro 2024 qualifiers against Norway and Scotland in March.
