Failure to handle COVID….. Investigation against the former Italian Prime Minister

Rome: Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte for mishandling the COVID-19 situation in early 2020.

Former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, then-Health Minister Roberto Speranza, and Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana mishandled the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, leading to the deaths of nearly 50 people, a prosecutor in Bergamo said Thursday.

The negligence of the 20 defendants, including ministers and other officials, “caused the death of approximately fifty people,” according to the Bergamo prosecutor’s office.

Following pressure from the victims’ families, the court issued a new finding following an investigation that began in mid-2020.

In the first wave of COVID-19, more than 6,000 people died in Bergamo, and prosecutors say 4,000 deaths could have been avoided if people in the area had been quarantined immediately.

“Our goal,” he explained, was to find out what had occurred and provide answers to the people of Bergamo. According to the investigating officers, there are allegations necessary to take action against them based on the findings.

Conte, Speranza, and other top officials, as per investigators, underestimated the risk of COVID-19 in March 2020 when the government failed to establish a “red zone” in Nembro and Alzano Lombardo, the two regions most affected by the epidemic. Many lost their lives because of this.

Antonio Chiappani, the prosecutor leading the investigation, said the preliminary investigation included an analysis of “documents” and the suspect’s emails and telephone messages.

Meanwhile, the defendants will have time to present their arguments before the judge, who will then decide whether or not to send them to trial.

Conte, who now leads the Five Star Movement, responded that he is ready to cooperate with the judiciary.
