Work Permits in Ireland: A Public Consultation on Policy Change Has Been Launched

Dublin: A public consultation has been launched to review the criteria for issuing various work permits in Ireland.

This review will be carried out in order to develop a new list of critical skill occupations, ineligible occupations, and general employment permits.

The government has asked the employers of the country and those related to the employment sectors to submit suggestions and opinions in this regard. Proposals can be submitted until August 18 via the Department of Enterprise’s website.

There are currently thousands of job opportunities in Ireland. It is often difficult to find skilled workers exclusively from European countries. To attract more people from non-EU countries, there is a need to include more job categories in the critical skills sector than are currently included, said Minister of State for the Department of Enterprise Neale Richmond at the start of the discussions on this.

Employers may face difficulties in recruiting for a specific occupation if the country’s labour system prohibits hiring foreign candidates for that occupation. A general directive to move such occupations into the critical skill category would alleviate the current problems. Minister Richmond said.

An application can be submitted for consultation to be included in the critical skill occupation list and general lists for work permits, or to express an opinion that workers from abroad should not be admitted to a particular occupational category. Employers, representative bodies, government departments, agencies, and other interested parties may comment on the same.

There is a high demand in Ireland for health care workers, agricultural workers, and general workers who are in short supply and are currently on general work permits to be moved from the existing job list to a category that provides more benefits to the country. Now is the opportunity to officially request that the government bring any job into the critical skill category.

You can make submissions in this regard through the Department of Enterprise’s website until August 18. The Department’s website link for further information and submissions is given below: https://enterprise.gov.ie/en/consultations/public-consultation-review-of-occupations-lists-2023.html
