IIT campus in Tanzania will be the first in itself to be led by a woman director
As per the officials, the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus outside of India will be in Tanzania, and it will be led by a woman director. while also stating that the overseas campus would begin with two courses in October.
Preeti Aghalayam, an IIT-M alumna and professor in the department of chemical engineering, has been named director-in-charge of the Zanzibar campus. IIT-M director V Kamakoti, told a media conference in Delhi.
“At IIT-M, we are very interested in promoting women to leadership positions.” We are pursuing sustainable development goals, one of which demands that gender balance be implemented. “Professor Preeti will be the first woman to lead IIT,” he stated.
Aghalayam, 49, earned a BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1995 and a Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focuses on Chemical Reaction Engineering, and she is a specialist in Underground Coal Gasification, Automotive Aftertreatment, and CO2 utilisation for hard-to-adate sectors.
She became a faculty member at IIT-M in 2010. She also works at the Institute’s Office of Global Engagement, where she manages foreign academic programmes. The Principal Scientific Advisor’s office recently acknowledged her as one of the 75 Women in STEM.
According to Kamakoti, registration for admission to their overseas campus has already begun on their official website (https://www.iitm.ac.in/zanzibar/), and its senate will soon conclude the admission procedure, which will involve a screening exam devised by faculty specialists at IIT-M as well as an interview.
