HSE to be divided into six sectors; Cabinet approves reforms
Dublin: Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has been given cabinet approval for Ireland’s long-awaited HSE reform programme. The revamp is part of the Healthcare reforms, which will see the HSE split into six new health sectors.
Each region will also have Executive Officers (REOs). These REOs will be responsible for providing high-quality and safe healthcare, the health department said.
This update will come into effect in February 2024. The new appointments, which include regional executive officers, are expected to be made by October. These positions have been offered a salary of up to 257,000 euros under the new public-only hospital consultant contract. The Department of Health stated that full details of the new positions associated with the reforms would be published soon.
The Health Minister said that although the classification into health sectors is a structurally significant change, this is not the primary objective of the reforms. The government intends to improve its capacity to provide patients and others with timely and integrated care. Planning should be done in accordance with the needs, and financial assistance should be made available. The minister stated that additional reforms would be implemented gradually.
Bernard Gloster, HSE CEO and co-chair of the SlainteCare Programme Board, stated: “The integration of GPs, community services, nursing support, social care services, and acute hospitals will ensure the best possible health service.”
