“STORM BABET” Flooding in and Around Cork City

Torrential rain and severe flooding in the vicinity of Cork City as Storm Babet maintains its grip on the region. An orange rain warning is currently in place for Cork, Kerry, and Waterford, effective until 1 p.m.

Over the past 24 hours, some local Met Éireann weather stations in Cork have recorded a substantial 115mm of rainfall. In Cork City, reports of spot flooding emerged in low-lying areas around the quays.

Several road closures are in effect due to flooding, with Cotter Street, Rutland Street, and Centre Park Road among the affected areas. Pope’s Quay remains open but subject to slow-speed travel. Meanwhile, St. Patrick’s Quay and Lavitt’s Quay are significantly flooded and nearly impassable. Substantial surface water is reported on various streets in the city.

In Mayfield, St. Killian’s School has closed for the day, sending students home due to impassable roads in the vicinity. Similarly, numerous roads around Glanmire, including R614 Whitecross at Hennessy’s garage and the Sarsfieldscourt Hospital side of Buck Leary’s Cross, have become impassable.

Adverse weather conditions have disrupted traffic lights near Mahon Point, prompting caution for motorists in the area. Flooding has caused significant traffic congestion in Carrigaline. Cork County Council has initiated monitoring efforts, deploying sandbags and pumping arrangements in known problem areas.

Additionally, flooding has been reported in Cobh, Midleton, Passage West, Rathcormac, and along the Killarney Road in Mallow. The main street in Glenbrook is heavily flooded and impassable.

Social media footage depicts severe flooding on Chestnut Drive in Youghal. Local authorities have also cautioned that “forecasted conditions may give rise to localised power outages.

In Kerry, the Local Coordination Group, comprising senior management from Kerry County Council, the Gardaí, HSE, Kerry Fire Service, and Kerry Civil Defence, convened to organise a response to the orange weather warning. The group has committed to monitoring the situation until the warning is lifted this afternoon.

In Kerry, over 1,600 homes and businesses are currently without power.

Waterford’s severe weather management team is also vigilantly monitoring the situation. The N25 at Ticknock is flooded but still passable. The L-2020 Bog Road, from the Spring Roundabout on the N25 to Luskanargid, is similarly affected.

Ground crews in Waterford remain on standby to address localised flooding and any emerging issues.

Met Éireann warns of ongoing heavy rain, strong gusty winds from the east to the southeast, and an increased risk of flooding and disruption in southern coastal counties. Poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions are expected in the affected regions until the warning is lifted.

A status yellow rainfall warning is also in place for Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Connacht until 6 p.m. this evening, with similar weather conditions and driving hazards expected.

Furthermore, a third rainfall warning encompasses all counties in Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan and is set to expire at 8 p.m. Met Éireann’s meteorologist, Gerry Murphy, anticipates continuous and heavy rainfall until the warnings lapse on Wednesday afternoon. Temperature ranges today will be between 12°C and 16°C, dropping to 8°C to 11°C by nightfall.
