“Lovers Flock to Dublin’s St. Valentine’s Memorial Seeking Love’s Blessings on Valentine’s Day”

Dublin: On Valentine’s Day, devotees of love are converging at Dublin’s St. Valentine’s Memorial, the resting place of Saint Valentine, known as the martyr of enduring love, where they seek the saint’s intercession for their romantic endeavours.

Many visitors traditionally visit the site in hopes of finding their soulmate and experiencing the magic of love. It’s customary for couples about to embark on marriage to have their wedding rings blessed amidst the solemnity of Valentine’s Day Masses.

The mortal remains of Saint Valentine are housed at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. Originally buried in Rome after his martyrdom in the 3rd century, an Irish priest, Fr. John Spratt, secured permission from Pope Gregory XVI in 1835 to relocate the saint’s remains to Ireland, where they now rest at the White Friar Church.
Visitors, fueled by faith and hope, express their desires for love and companionship. Some seek the saint’s blessings to find their destined partner, while others share their journey of searching for love through various means, including speed dating and online platforms. Couples who found each other at the memorial and are now planning to wed also pay homage to the saint.

Saint Valentine, executed in the 3rd century for solemnising marriages in secret during a time when it was forbidden for Christian soldiers, advocated for love and unity. In his honor, an effigy and chapel were erected at the church in 1950. The saint’s significance extends beyond Valentine’s Day, as Fr. David Weekliam, the Carmelite priest overseeing the church, emphasises the saint’s enduring message of love, resilience, and familial harmony.
