The disaster that awaits Ireland, will this be a land of refugees?

Dublin: Far-right groups in Ireland have levelled accusations against the country, alleging an orchestrated effort to transform Ireland into a sanctuary for Palestinian refugees. While several European nations tighten their borders in response to perceived threats from Islamic extremist groups, both the ruling party and the opposition in Ireland are purportedly gearing up to embrace undocumented immigrants.

The far-right alleges that ongoing Palestinian solidarity gatherings and demonstrations in Ireland are being fueled by individuals who have already entered the country as part of the occupation. Political figures like Michael Martin and Mary Lou McDonald are accused of advocating for undocumented immigrants by citing examples of legal immigrants who have secured employment and resettlement in Ireland.

In contrast, far-right factions oppose undocumented immigrants on religious grounds, distinguishing between legal and illegal immigrants. They contend that major political parties, including Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, the Green Party, and Labour, are either knowingly or unknowingly promoting religious immigration. Consequently, these groups have pledged to vote against the referendum on March 8, which is championed by the government and supported by all major political parties.

Drawing inspiration from far-right successes in Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Poland, where anti-immigrant sentiments propelled them to power, recent polling data from Ireland Thinks suggests a significant portion of Irish citizens share concerns about immigration. More than a third of respondents express support for anti-immigration platforms, indicating a potential shift in political sentiment.

The rally in Dublin, attracting tens of thousands of participants, underscored solidarity with Palestine, with demands for sanctions against Israel and the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Ireland. Notably, Irish civil society groups, refugees, and individuals with dual citizenship joined the rally, emphasising the widespread support for Palestinian rights.

Richard Boyd Barrett, leader of People Before Profit and a vocal advocate for Palestine, believes sustained protests could influence government policies. He admonishes Irish politicians against aligning with US President Joe Biden, who backs Israel, suggesting a disconnect between Ireland’s stance and Biden’s pro-Israel stance.
