“PM Modi Inaugurates India’s First Metro Line Under the Mighty River in Kolkata, Signifying an Infrastructure Milestone”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s inaugural metro line passing beneath a major river in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

During the event, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for various connectivity projects valued at Rs 15,400 crore. Among the metro railway services inaugurated were operations from Kolkata Metro’s Kavi Subhash, Majerhat, and Esplanade stations; Kochi Metro; Agra Metro; Meerut-RRTS section; and Pune Metro.

The underwater metro service is a key component of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section within Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, spanning a distance of 4.8 km beneath the Hooghly river. This service will connect Howrah with Salt Lake, the twin cities of West Bengal’s state capital. Three of the six stations along this route will be located underground, enabling commuters to traverse a 520-metre stretch beneath the Hooghly river in just 45 seconds.

Accompanied by school students, Prime Minister Modi embarked on the inaugural ride of the underwater metro, underscoring the significance of the occasion. The ceremony witnessed the presence of top officials and dignitaries, marking a historic moment for India’s transportation landscape.

This landmark inauguration follows Kolkata Metro’s historic achievement in April 2023, when it conducted trials by running a train through the underwater tunnel—a pioneering feat in India’s metro infrastructure development.
