Sudan Confronts World’s Most Severe Hunger and Displacement Crisis
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN humanitarian chief for Sudan, expressed deep concern over the looting of a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy in Central Darfur, stating that the stolen aid would no longer reach the vulnerable people who need it. The WFP has called on authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure the safe delivery of aid.
This incident occurs amidst a severe humanitarian crisis in Sudan, driven by ongoing conflict between rival military factions, which has brought the country to the brink of famine. Over half the population, approximately 26 million people, are experiencing critical levels of hunger, and nearly 9.4 million have been displaced, with 1.9 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries.
The situation is particularly dire in the Darfur region, where intense clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have severely impacted civilians, especially in El Fasher, the provincial capital. UN agencies, despite facing significant challenges and insecurity, continue to provide essential aid, including safe drinking water, health services, and malnutrition screening through UNICEF and expanded food assistance by WFP.
However, the humanitarian response is critically underfunded. As of June 24, 2024, only 16.6% of the required $2.7 billion for the Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan has been secured, highlighting the urgent need for additional funding to prevent famine during the lean season.
