“Ireland Sees a 20% Increase in Work Permits, Primarily in Healthcare and Social Work”
DUBLIN: India continues to dominate Ireland’s acquisition of work permits. In the first half of this year alone, figures from the Department of Enterprise reveal a 20.5% increase in work permits issued, with the majority held by Indians.
Rising Numbers
This year, 19,303 work permits were issued, with the highest number allocated to the healthcare and social work sectors, accounting for 35% of the total. Indians secured 34% of these permits, amounting to 6,746 work permits. Following India are Brazil, the Philippines, Pakistan, and South Africa. Nigerians received the fewest work permits, holding only 2.5% of the total.
Diverse Workforce
Work permits were also granted to citizens from China, the US, Zimbabwe, and Malaysia, reflecting Ireland’s increasingly diverse labour market.
Information and Communication: 3,282 work permits
Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing: 1,859 work permits
Accommodation and Food Service: 1,458 work permits
Regional Distribution
Dublin, the capital, received the highest number of foreign workers with 9,241 work permits. Other counties include:
Cork: 1,555 work permits
Kildare: 1,296 work permits
Limerick: 929 work permits
Meath: 803 work permits
The trend seen last year persists, with a total of 30,981 work permits issued in 2023. The primary sectors remain healthcare, IT, agriculture, and accommodation services.
