Daniel Wiffen Wins Ireland’s First Gold in Paris Olympics with Victory in Men’s 800m Freestyle

Dublin: Daniel Wiffen made history by winning Ireland’s first gold medal of the Paris Games in the men’s 800m freestyle final, becoming the country’s first male Olympic medalist in swimming and third overall. This marks Ireland’s first swimming gold for a male athlete and the first Olympic gold for a Northern Irish athlete in 36 years.

The last Northern Irish athletes to win Olympic gold were Stephen Martin and Jimmy Kirkwood, part of the victorious Team GB hockey team in 1988, while the last individual gold was Mary Peters’ pentathlon win in 1972. Stormont First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little Pengelly praised Wiffen’s achievement in a joint statement, highlighting the significance of his Olympic record-setting performance.
