Israeli Airstrike on Gaza Shelter Kills Over 60 in One of the Deadliest Attacks

An Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City early Saturday killed over 60 people, making it one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, claiming the target was a Hamas command centre within the school, a claim Hamas denied. The attack on the Tabeen school, which was sheltering around 6,000 displaced people, also left 47 others injured. The strike occurred without warning as people were praying inside the school. The United Nations reports that 477 out of 564 schools in Gaza have been hit or damaged during the conflict. Israeli officials attribute civilian casualties to Hamas using civilian areas for military operations, while neighbouring countries like Egypt and Jordan have condemned the attack, calling it a violation of international law. The conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel in October, has resulted in the deaths of more than 39,600 Palestinians and the displacement of over 1.9 million people in Gaza.
