Flash Floods Claim 95 Lives, Wreak Havoc Across Eastern and Southern Spain
Flash flooding in eastern and southern Spain has left at least 95 dead, with several people still missing, as torrential rains caused severe disruption across multiple regions. Valencia’s regional president, Carlos Mazón, stated that accurately assessing the death toll remains challenging, with some areas inaccessible.
Spain’s central government has launched a crisis committee and deployed over 1,600 emergency responders. Rail and air travel have been significantly affected, with high-speed train services and flights disrupted across cities including Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged residents to prioritise safety, while King Felipe VI expressed condolences for the victims. The EU has offered support through its Copernicus satellite monitoring system and may activate further assistance if requested.
