Former PM Manmohan Singh Cremated with State Honours; Leaders Pay Tributes to the Architect of Economic Reforms
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a pivotal figure in India’s economic liberalisation and the country’s 13th prime minister, was cremated with full state honours at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday. Prominent leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid tribute to the Congress veteran, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night at AIIMS, New Delhi.
Dr. Singh, the first Sikh to hold the prime ministerial office, led the Congress-led UPA government from 2004 to 2014. His tenure is remembered for significant economic reforms and the landmark India-US nuclear deal. However, his second term was marred by corruption scandals and economic challenges.
A technocrat and economist by training, Singh was born in 1932 in Gah, now in Pakistan. He earned degrees from Cambridge and Oxford and held various esteemed positions, including Finance Minister in 1991, during which he navigated India through a severe financial crisis.
Global leaders, including US President Joe Biden, lauded his contributions, with Biden calling him a “true statesman.” Prime Minister Modi described him as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders,” while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remembered him as a “mentor and guide.”
Dr. Singh retired from public life after the Congress’s defeat in the 2014 elections, making his last public appearance in the Rajya Sabha in August 2023. Seven days of state mourning were declared in his honour, reflecting the nation’s respect for his legacy.
