Micheál Martin to Assume Office as Ireland’s New Prime Minister
Dublin: Micheál Martin will officially take office as Ireland’s Prime Minister today following a vote in the Irish Parliament at 11 a.m. While Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald is also in the running, she is not expected to secure the majority support needed for election.
Martin, leader of Fianna Fáil, has already garnered the backing of the Dáil majority. Once the official announcement is made, President Michael D. Higgins will formally appoint Martin as Prime Minister at Áras an Uachtaráin, the presidential residence. Following his appointment, Martin will return to the Dáil to finalise the composition of his cabinet, where he will announce ministerial appointments.
Term and Coalition Agreement
Martin previously served as Ireland’s prime minister until December 2022. Under the current coalition agreement, he will remain in office until November 2027. At that point, Simon Harris, also of Fianna Fáil, will take over as Prime Minister for the remaining two years of the coalition term. In the meantime, Harris will serve as Deputy Prime Minister in Martin’s cabinet and is expected to hold the Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Defence portfolios.
Expected Cabinet Appointments
Party sources have indicated the following potential ministerial appointments in Martin’s administration:
- Paschal Donohoe: Expected to take the role of finance minister.
- Jack Chambers: Likely to move to the Department of Public Expenditure.
- Darragh O’Brien: Expected to remain as housing minister but is also being considered for the Justice Department.
- Justice Department: Possible candidates include Jim O’Callaghan and James Browne.
- Mary Butler: Anticipated to be appointed as Minister for Child Welfare.
- Norma Foley: Likely to transition to the Department of Social Protection.
- Helen McEntee: Expected to take over the education portfolio.
- Patrick O’Donovan: Likely to be appointed Minister for Arts, Culture, and Communication.
- Peter Burke: Expected to remain in the Department of Enterprise.
- Jennifer Carroll MacNeill: Likely to become health minister.
- Martin Heydon: Anticipated to be promoted to agriculture minister.
- Dara Calleary: Expected to lead the Department of Transportation, Energy, and Climate Change.
Other likely cabinet members include James Lawless, Timmy Dooley, Charlie McConalogue, and Thomas Byrne. Niamh Smyth is also expected to be promoted to a ministerial role. Hildegarde Naughton may continue as a Fine Gael super junior minister. Additionally, Sean Kenny and Noel Grealish are expected to serve as super junior ministers representing regional independents.
